Legal Assistant Team Lead

Contract Type:

Full Time

Location:

NZ - Canterbury - South Island

Industry:

About the role
Take the next step in your legal support career and lead a team of your own. I am currently supporting my client in Christchurch, who is looking for an experienced legal support professional to lead its support team of three, across a range of practice areas.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll oversee daily workflows, coordinate workloads and help ensure lawyers receive consistent, high-quality support. You’ll also play an important part in developing team capability, improving processes and creating a more efficient way of working.

With exposure to a broad range of legal work, this opportunity would suit an experienced Legal Assistant or Legal Executive who enjoys supporting others, solving problems and making sure the details are taken care of. I am particularly interested in hearing from you, if you have experience in residential property, commercial property, and private client work.

If you’re ready to move beyond your own workload and have a genuine influence on how a team performs, this could be an excellent opportunity.

Benefits
  • Step into a hands-on leadership role
  • Opportunity to improve systems and processes
  • Health insurance and wellbeing leave
  • Birthday leave and paid professional development
  • Supportive team with a strong community focus
Duties
  • Lead the daily operation of the legal support team
  • Allocate work and manage competing priorities
  • Monitor turnaround times and service standards
  • Coach, mentor and train team members
  • Review work and provide constructive feedback
  • Resolve workflow issues and support team members
  • Improve processes, systems and team efficiency
  • Maintain strong relationships with lawyers and management
Skills & experience
To be considered for this role, you will ideally have at least 5 years' experience in a legal support position, such as Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary or Legal Executive, along with a Legal Executive Diploma.

You’ll have strong practical knowledge across several areas of law, particularly conveyancing, commercial matters, estates, wills, enduring powers of attorney and family law, including relationship property and contracting out agreements. Experience in trusts or immigration law would also be advantageous.
Previous leadership, training or mentoring experience is important, as you’ll be responsible for supporting the development and performance of the wider team.

You’ll bring excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines. Just as importantly, you’ll be approachable, proactive and confident communicating with people at all levels.

Culture
People enjoy working here because the environment is friendly, down-to-earth and genuinely team focused. There is a strong emphasis on supporting one another, sharing knowledge and finding better ways to work, alongside a commitment to staff wellbeing and involvement in the local community.

About the company
An established law firm with multiple offices across Christchurch and North Canterbury. The firm provides a broad range of legal services to individuals, families and businesses, with a reputation for approachable advice, strong client relationships and a supportive workplace.
