Corporate & Commercial hiring holds steady as businesses back HR, admin and support functions

For corporate and commercial teams, July's SEEK NZ Employment Report points to a market that's staying selective rather than slowing down. HR & Recruitment job ads are up 12.6% year-on-year, Administration & Office Support is up 4.2%, and Government & Defence remains 6.6% higher than this time last year - a clear signal that businesses are continuing to invest in the people and systems that keep them running, even as they take a more measured approach month to month.

That measured pace shows up most clearly in Wellington, where Government & Defence, Accounting and Healthcare & Medical drove a modest 1.3% pullback in July. But with HR, admin and government roles still well up on an annual basis, this looks less like a retreat and more like businesses pacing their hiring to match a broader economic backdrop, one shaped by Statistics New Zealand's latest unemployment figure of 5.6%, which reflects a global energy shock squeezing company margins and a wider talent pool entering the market.

For accounting and banking teams, the picture is more mixed month to month, and that is exactly where a considered hiring approach pays off. Matching the right technical and cultural fit pays dividends, rather than rushing to fill a seat.

Sam Chatterley-Hodgson, Recruitment Consultant in our Auckland Corporate & Commercial team, says the shift is playing to strength for candidates who understand the value they bring. "Corporate employers up here are still building out their HR, admin and finance functions. They are also being more deliberate about who joins the team," she says. "Candidates who can speak clearly to the commercial impact of their work, not just their day-to-day tasks, are the ones standing out and moving through process fastest right now."

Fiona Sanderson, Recruitment Consultant in our Christchurch office, says the same discipline is showing up in the South Island. "Canterbury businesses have taken a steady, considered approach to hiring across corporate and commercial roles right through the year," she says. " Employers are taking the time to find the right fit for their teams, while candidates are being more selective about opportunities that align with their long-term career goals."

AI is also becoming a bigger part of the corporate conversation, with AI-related skills referenced in job ads up 94.1% year-on-year and the fastest growth coming in AI ethics and governance, a strong signal for corporate and commercial professionals that AI literacy is quickly becoming a core, not niche, part of the skill set employers are looking for.

The overall message for corporate and commercial hiring: demand is holding, businesses are investing in the right people for the long term, and there's real opportunity for candidates and employers who come to the table prepared. There's real value in reviewing how you're positioned well before an opportunity actually surfaces. By the time a role appears, first impressions have often already formed, and getting ahead of that is entirely within a leader's control.
